How to store opened wine?

“It could never happen to me”, is what most of us might think. But imagine the following situation. You are having a nice evening with your family, drinking excellent wine, but out of nowhere, your mother-in-law or some other uninvited visitor is ringing the door bell. So, what should you do with the opened bottle?  Do you love them enough to share the wine with them or do you quickly hide the opened bottle and save it for tomorrow night?  If you prefer the latter, read on to see you to make the most of that unopened bottle.

Good wine should be approached in the same way as good people – it means with love and respect. So it is important to know how to deal with an open and unfinished wine to maintain its quality.

The easiest and cheapest way is to keep the cork, close the bottle and store it in a fridge. White and red wines can be stored for 3 – 5 days, rosé wines even for 5 – 7 days. However in this case, there is still the danger of slight oxidation of the wine, especially if the cork has been very tightly in the bottle, because it is impossible to close the bottle so firmly.

You can also think ahead and buy wines with screwcap or glass stopper. You might think that these wines are rather cheap or of poor quality, but in fact this is certainly not the case.

pumpAnd in the end – the solution for connoisseurs. You can buy a special vacuum pump. It sucks out all excess air from the open bottle and there are created optimal conditions to retain the wine in good form for a longer time. Even opened bottles of sparkling wines can be stored in this way for a few days without worries. By using a special two-way pump, you can pressurize the wine again and prevent the leakage of bubbles.

The price of this special pump is about 200 Czech crowns, which includes the spare stoppers. So if you are among the many wine lovers out there, it is a good investment, isn’t it?
